Signal is an encrypted communications application for Android and iOS. It uses the Internet to send one-to-one and group messages, which can include files, voice notes, images and videos, and make one-to-one voice and video calls. Signal uses standard cellular mobile numbers as identifiers, and uses end-to-end encryption to secure all communications to other Signal users.

@cryptonator1337 @signalapp Technology is agnostic and things like encryption, have reasons for spies to fund even if it also makes it harder to do spying. Onion network? Developed by CIA. Open source doesn't require repeatable builds. It just means you need to build each version yourself.

@polrel_witter That's the internet in general. What @urbit offers is voluntary permanent identity and a more robust stack to build upon. The ecosystem would greatly benefit from more avenues of sharing: #nostr, @signalapp, @joinmastodon, etc.

@P_Kallioniemi What's the source of this? @signalapp being /above/ Facebook in data collection raises quite the eyebrow.

@terribleMirrors @urbit @signalapp @p They aren't crappy NFTs. Despite my frustrations, I won't lump them in with the useless JPEG-on-GDrive crap. They facilitate communication. However, as you noted, the proper tools to provide value don't exist yet.

@terribleMirrors @urbit @signalapp @p It's fine. The situation isn't terrible, but it's clear that progress could be much, much faster. I've seen similar behavior in other projects and it's a slow fading into irrelevance.

@terribleMirrors @urbit @signalapp @p That wouldn't be such an issue if there were incentives to build regardless of what the UF or Tlon does. Unless you buy a star (~$1000) or a galaxy (~$1mill), you have no worthwhile incentive. No affiliate/referral program either.

@terribleMirrors @urbit @signalapp @p Oh, yes, absolutely. However, I've read so many of these "X should happen" opinions, but seen so little in terms of organization. I would do more, but I have 0 incentive.

@ag_smarmy @urbit @signalapp No and he never interacts with us. Probably has ignored all notifications for years. Is still active though!

@terribleMirrors @urbit @signalapp I have to give my phone number to strangers. That's the problem of Signal. I can't remember every faceless ~mipmun-nipnum @p. That's the problem of @urbit.
