@johnerent @nathanmhansen @KarmaGatzy @XcelEnergyMN I haven’t been insisting that this switch has to do with the meter lol OP made that claim, up to him to clarifying how that would occur(meter —> remote override?). I saw it as him complaining about Xcel meters, & saying it could be comparable to the saver switches at some point.

@johnerent @nathanmhansen @KarmaGatzy @XcelEnergyMN The article discusses smart thermostats and an optional remote feature. Where does it discuss wiring a switch to your AC power supply? What is needed to be physically installed? you literally just opt into a program that grants them permission to utilize this feature.

@nathanmhansen @not_abigdealtho @KarmaGatzy @XcelEnergyMN This article has nothing to do with meters. It has to do with saver switches wired by an electrician into AC power supply. It is a voluntary program that saves you 20% on your utility bill. “All of the customers affected had enrolled in a voluntary program, called AC Rewards.”

@weakpolymath @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN I was half joking. This would probably stop the meter reader from doing their job (reading your consumption) and would be a problem for you. I don't know know to block their incoming signal. Maybe you could find the receiver on the unit and block it. Don't block outgoing

That meter has nothing to do with completely unrelated “saver switch”tech that has to be wired into thermostats &AC with written consent. In any event, government has nothing to do with it.

Nothing is being conflated, op criticizing one device that reads/reports output, the other has a feature permitting remote access and override controls. His complaint is that incentivizing/preferring this feature is/has been prone to abuse.

They’re leveraging cost & incentivizing a move to feat. granting remote override. You’re crying bc you’re mad at someone voicing their concern.

@nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN No, thermostats are typically electively controlled through a customer's own internet connection, governed by the rules and agreements between them and the tstat manufacturer.
