@nathanmhansen @not_abigdealtho @KarmaGatzy @XcelEnergyMN This article has nothing to do with meters. It has to do with saver switches wired by an electrician into AC power supply. It is a voluntary program that saves you 20% on your utility bill. “All of the customers affected had enrolled in a voluntary program, called AC Rewards.”

@weakpolymath @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN I was half joking. This would probably stop the meter reader from doing their job (reading your consumption) and would be a problem for you. I don't know know to block their incoming signal. Maybe you could find the receiver on the unit and block it. Don't block outgoing

@not_abigdealtho @KarmaGatzy @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN He is demanding an analog meter versus one that transmits kilowatt hour usage for billing. That meter has nothing to do with completely unrelated “saver switch”tech that has to be wired into thermostats &AC with written consent. In any event, government has nothing to do with it.

@johnerent @KarmaGatzy @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN That is exactly what a comparison is. Nothing is being conflated, op criticizing one device that reads/reports output, the other has a feature permitting remote access and override controls. His complaint is that incentivizing/preferring this feature is/has been prone to abuse.

@johnerent @KarmaGatzy @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN You’re the one implying xcel is sneaking around, so the nefarious/fantastical connotation is on you. Who said they are sneaking around? They’re leveraging cost & incentivizing a move to feat. granting remote override. You’re crying bc you’re mad at someone voicing their concern.

@nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN No, thermostats are typically electively controlled through a customer's own internet connection, governed by the rules and agreements between them and the tstat manufacturer.

@TheTaxButler @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN Is this happening before or after the black helicopters start flying overhead and we all get put in those Obama detention camps I read about?

@nathanmhansen @johnerent @XcelEnergyMN A couple years from now: Xcel: “in order to better serve our customers we will be requiring all new service startups to use smarty thermostats. Residents may purchase their own OR Xcel can provide residents a smarty thermostat free of charge”

@nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN Xcel also doesn’t want to tell you that the new meters allow them to remotely shut off power to your residence without the need for a service tech to manually do it on site. They claim it’s for easier service disconnects/maintenance but we know where it leads.

@not_abigdealtho @KarmaGatzy @nathanmhansen @XcelEnergyMN There is the conspiracy theory. This is conflating two entirely different things: (1) A meter that transmits the number of kilowatts hours used for billing purposes so someone doesn’t have to physically read a analog meter and (2) a voluntary “saver switch” attached to your AC.
