great use case for @signalapp user names: someone reaches out to you for a call. Different time zones, unsure of phone software, not sure they're on WhatsApp You give them the signal username, they send a message, and you're connected. Then you can do your encrypted video call

@signalapp feature idea: Using the same encryption as is used in messaging, allow someone to output the encrypted message and send via iMessage, X, or other mechanisms. Only can be decrypted by the recipient(s) in their Signal app based on the verified number exchange.

Email is just old. It was never built for privacy or even security. If you and your friend are for some odd reason, use email to send messages. use @signalapp it is way better and built from the ground up for security and privacy.
