Having a back-up power source is normal even now - many have small diesel motors tucked away for use in the event of a power outage.

@SandraWeeden@sharonxmartin Living at 900ft on a very difficult track in a 200 yr old stone house I will continue to burn wood which is free apart from the hard work to saw fallen branches. The power outages in winter mean heating doesn’t work so a wood-fired range is a godsend for warmth and cooking
