@Bruce35dc @MoraleImprover @WBJDan @Amtrak Again, it’s an issue of foot traffic predating the pandemic. Metro can be accessed without entering the station. And MARC/VRE ridership doesn’t approach NY Penn Station. Union Station is actually comparable to PHL 30th Street Station or BAL Penn Station in terms of amenities.

@Bruce35dc @MoraleImprover @WBJDan @Amtrak Economics have changed since it was relaunched as a pseudo-suburban mall with a movie theater, sit down restaurant (B. Smith’s and more recently Thunder Grill) and run-of-the-mill retail (ties, luggage, etc.) Commuters need coffee/meal-to-go, magazines/books and not much else.

@Bruce35dc @MoraleImprover @WBJDan @Amtrak Not much different than retail struggling in most downtown commercial areas. Union Station is an historic commuter rail station similar to Grand Central but without an Apple Store.

@DuringJs @travis_robert @Amtrak is only oriented towards *pre-planned* recreational travel. Late scheduling is priced for business travelers who aren't as sensitive to the price hikes closer to departure. Want to take a last minute trip between cities and flying or even Lyft is probably cheaper.

Now with fixed forward and backward seating @Amtrak has started switching the location of the quiet car around. But no way to know where the car is located other than wandering up and down the platform. Add the info to the app Amtrak! #amtrak #railfail
